Government & Private Land in Tamil Nadu
In Tamil Nadu, land is divided into government and private ownership. Private land is owned by individuals or companies. Government land belongs to the state. You can check exact land ownership using your local District, Taluk, Village, and Survey Number on the state’s online portal.
Private Land:
Private land is property that you, a family member, or a business legally owns and controls.
Proof of Ownership:
You need a Patta. This is a legal document issued by the government that proves you own a specific piece of land.
Property Details:
You also receive a Chitta and Adangal. These documents show the type of land (dry or wet) and what it is used for.
Government Land:
Government land belongs to the public and is managed by different state departments.
Poramboke:
This is a common word in Tamil Nadu. It refers to government “waste” or unassessed lands. Examples include roads, ponds, grazing grounds, and forests.
Usage:
While the government is the owner, they can lease land for businesses or housing. They can also give free house sites to eligible poor families.
