About Himanta Biswa Sarma
Himanta Biswa Sarma is the 15th and current Chief Minister of Assam, taking his oath of office for his second consecutive term on May 12, 2026. A key leader for the Bharatiya Janata Party in Northeast India, he has been representing the Jalukbari constituency as a Member of the Assam Legislative Assembly since 2001.
Political Shift:
A former prominent member of the Indian National Congress, he joined the BJP in August 2015 and became the convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
Education:
Holds a Post-Graduate degree in Political Science from Cotton College / Gauhati University, as well as an LLB and a PhD.
Long Tenure in Government:
With over two decades of legislative experience, he served as a Minister for key portfolios (Finance, Health, Education, and Public Works) between 2001 and 2021 before taking over as Chief Minister.
Reforms & Initiatives:
Known for spearheading mission-based models across the state such as “Gunotsav” (education) and “Mission Basundhara” (land reforms), as well as driving infrastructure projects like medical colleges and state development schemes.
Focus:
His current administration is prioritizing a major overhaul in healthcare infrastructure and flood management as the state experiences heavy seasonal disasters.
