Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language native to the Bengal region of South Asia. With approximately 300 million native speakers and another 40 million as second language speakers, Bengali is the sixth most spoken native language and the seventh most spoken language by the total number of speakers in the world. Bengali is the fifth most spoken Indo-European language.

The Bengali language is native to the region of Bengal, which comprises the present-day nation of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. Besides the native region it is also spoken by the Bengalis living in Tripura, southern Assam and the Bengali population in the Indian union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Bengali is also spoken in the neighbouring states of Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand, and sizeable minorities of Bengali speakers reside in Indian cities outside Bengal, including Delhi, Mumbai, Thane, Varanasi, and Vrindavan.

Bengali is a tonal language, meaning that the pitch of the voice can change the meaning of words. It is also a verb-final language, meaning that the verb comes at the end of the sentence. Bengali has a rich morphology, with many different affixes that can be added to words to change their meaning.

Bengali is a beautiful and expressive language, and it is the language of many famous poets, writers, and artists. Some of the most famous Bengali writers include Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, and Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Tagore was the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, and his work has been translated into many languages.
