Kokborok (or Tripuri) is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Indian state of Tripura and neighbouring areas of Bangladesh. Its name comes from kok meaning “verbal” and borok meaning “people” or “human”, It is one of the ancient languages of Northeast India.
Kokborok is written in the Bengali script, but there is also a romanized script called Kokborok Roman. The language has a rich oral tradition, and there are many folk songs, folktales, and proverbs in Kokborok. The Kokborok language is spoken by about 1.5 million people, most of whom live in Tripura. There are also significant Kokborok-speaking communities in the neighboring states of Assam, Mizoram, and Meghalaya.
