Hindi also known as Hindustani, is an Indo-Aryan language spoken as a first language by about 422 million people, primarily in India, Pakistan, Fiji, Mauritius, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, Suriname, South Africa, United Kingdom, and the United States. Hindi is also spoken by some in Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka. Hindi is the fourth most spoken language in the world by number of native speakers, and the third most spoken language overall after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
It is the most spoken language in India, where it is one of the official languages at the Union and state level, and the official language of the government of India. Hindi is also one of the official languages of the Union Territory of Puducherry, and has official status in the Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh. Hindi is a descendant of Sanskrit, the classical language of India. It is written in the Devanagari script, which is also used for other languages such as Marathi, Gujarati, Nepali, and Sanskrit. Hindi has a rich literary tradition, dating back to the 11th century.
