Defence Studies: An approach to teaching learning and conducting of activities In the last year (Std IX) we studied the concept of national security. The focus was on the defence of India and the role played by the Armed Forces and the ParaMilitary forces to defend India from any aggression from external powers. You were also introduced to the role played by the Police in maintaining peace and security.
The concept of security that is linked mainly with the defence of the country by the use of Armed Forces is a traditional approach to understanding national security. This is an important part of understanding the security of a country. This approach focuses on the security of the country and therefore is called state-centric.
It focuses mainly on the utility of military power and its ability to defend the borders of our country. This year we would expand the understanding of national security to such other areas that go beyond the traditional perspective of defence. National security is closely linked to the peace, stability and prosperity of the nation. Therefore all aspects that deal with the people and their daily lives are also to be understood.
We now would study the problems of internal security and disaster management. There is also a chapter on how the developments in science and technology affect our national security. This workbook includes a section on the possible career opportunities that students may think of in the areas that they have studied.
